Why would Charles Dickens, beloved author of A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities and many other classic books, write a simple retelling of the life of Christ for his children's eyes only, requesting that it not be published? Gerald Charles Dickens vividly portrays his great-great-grandfather in this new play by Jeffrey Hatcher that explores with humor and insight the emotions and forces in Dickens' life at the time of its writing, including his testy relationship with the young poet Swinburne.
